What is a database?
Being a database management firm, we are often asked, “what is a database”? Many people are often shocked by the simplicity of the answer. A database is simply an organized collection of information (data) that can be retrieved electronically.Â
Databases can come in many forms. A text file storing demographic information on your friends is a very simple database. Looking at the data in the text file, once you have a few records listed, isnt too appealing to the eye. It doesnt mean that the data is any less valid, but it is hard to sort through quickly and find the particualar piece of information you are loooking for. So what is needed is a piece of software that can read that text file and display the information to you in the form that is comfortable for you.
For more complex systems such as inventory managers, sales force tracking tools, construction applications, human resource tools, etc., a piece of database software is required. Common database software (referred to as Database Servers) are Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL. While MySQL, in most instances, is free to use, the other tools require licensing fees.
